Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) shapes, advances, and stewards a world-class undergraduate academic experience for students at the University of Washington. Within UAA, the Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to thriving communities. Building authentic community and campus partnerships drive our work. CELE programs are centered around the areas of community-engaged learning, democratic engagement, leadership education, P-12 student success and place-based initiatives. CELE Center has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Rural and Tribal Partnerships.

Overall Role: Reporting to the Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center, the Assistant Director of Rural and Tribal Partnerships provides direction, leadership and oversight of program administration and daily operations of Riverways Education Partnerships’ rural and tribal initiatives that work to connect students, schools and communities towards tribal sovereignty and racial justice. Through Riverways’ rural and tribal programs, UW undergraduate students mentor and support K-12 students in schools across Washington State as a means of transforming the learning and inspiring the growth of both groups of students, while addressing inequities in public education.

The Assistant Director of Rural and Tribal Initiatives oversees the administration and operations of student programs, including Literacy Arts Alternative Spring Break, STEM Alternative Spring Break, Culture and Science Exchange (CASE), Neah Bay Telling our Stories and Riverways Guides. Collectively, these programs engage 100 UW students with over 2000 K-12 youth across 15 schools throughout Washington State. This position also oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of professional, student employees, and interns; the logistical arrangements with campus and community partners, the counseling and mentoring of student program participants and leaders from UW’s diverse undergraduate population; and the development of strategic programmatic goals and implementation in order to contribute to the educational success of rural and tribal K-12 youth and transformative undergraduate learning experiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Program Leadership (60%)

  • Oversee all administrative aspects of the Riverways Education Partnerships’ rural and tribal initiatives including program operations, advising and outreach strategies.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, set strategic direction and goals for Riverways Education Partnerships’ rural and tribal initiatives.

  • Work in collaboration with CELE Center Lead Team to set vision and strategic goals for CELE Center programming.

  • Provide overall supervision of 1 FTE Stem Engagement Program Manager, 2 Graduate Staff Assistant, 1 AmeriCorps members and hourly student staff positions.

  • Conduct professional development and training for undergraduate student leaders to work with K-12 students in rural and tribal communities in partner school sites.

  • Coordinate and implement research and evaluation projects regarding rural and tribal initiatives for programmatic improvements and advancement efforts.

  • In collaboration with CELE Center’s Financial Manager, review budget status and spending reports for Riverways Education Partnerships budget, including 5-year NASA grant.

  • In collaboration with CELE Center’s Executive Director and Undergraduate Academic Affairs advancement staff, contribute to grant and proposal writing processes.Campus and Community Relations (30%)

  • Steward partnerships with 15 rural and tribal schools throughout Washington State to implement Riverways Education Partnerships’ rural and tribal programs. School stakeholders include district leaders, school principals, classroom teachers, and local host families.

  • Outreach, establish and maintain partnerships with UW faculty and program directors to implement the mission and goals of Riverways’ rural and tribal initiatives.Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) and UAA Contributions (10%)

  • Participate in UAA Leadership meetings and retreats.

  • Take part in CELE staff meetings; participate and/or facilitate meetings in alignment with the strategic direction of UAA’s community engagement and leadership education portfolio.

  • Lead and participate in CELE Center’s working groups and functional teams.

  • Serve on committees within UAA and other campus projects as requested. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Public Administration or related field Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in education, K-12 outreach, community-engaged learning, or student development.

  • Experience with building and stewarding community partnerships.

  • Experience with managing budgets.

  • Effective program management, staff supervision, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Understanding of educational inequities and the racial and socioeconomic disparities that exist in education. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Public Administration or related field and 2 years of experience in a K-12 or higher education setting managing the implementation of K-12 outreach or community-engaged learning programs.

  • Experience in rural or tribal partnership-building efforts.

  • Understanding of critical issues in rural and tribal education.

  • Experience with fundraising, donor relations, and advancement efforts.
