POSITION PURPOSE The University of Washington has an job opening for a Research Scientist 2 in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The role will study the efffect's of nutrition, environment and age on fertility in women and men. Menopause and the perimenopause. Oncofertility and onco-reproductive health. Molecular and cellular pathophysiology for chemotherapy induced ovotoxicity. Neuroendocrinology of vasomotor symptoms. Molecular and cellular biology of vitamin D induced neuroendocrine dysfunction in offspring exposed to in utero Vitamin D deficiency. Stem cell modeling for reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will have a critical role in the provision of services in the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility program (REI). Working under the general direction of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Supervisor, the successful candidate will participate in all aspects of operations for the Embryology laboratory. The successful candidate will contribute to quality assurance and quality control requirements, and will be responsible for ensuring environments are optimal for the safe handling, viability, testing, and growth monitoring of all reproductive specimens including oocytes, zygotes, and embryos. The successful candidate can be trained to acquire all lab skills according to the Tier 1-Tier 4 schedule, attached below. Upon achieving Tier 4 skill acquisition, the candidate/embryologist is fully trained and compensation should be adjusted upwards accordingly. Once fully trained, the successful candidate must be able to work independently with minimum supervision. Additionally, the successful candidate must be a flexible team player with exceptional communication skills and compassion.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and maintaining SART data for assisted reproductive technologies, as required by federal law.

The successful candidate may be asked to participate in research projects, presentations and publishing papers in assisted reproductive technologies, as well as in various corporate, state, and federally funded service and research grants.

CLINICAL LAB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tier 1 Skill Acquisition:

  • Daily quality control

  • Open and close lab

  • Media and dish preparation

  • Paperwork

  • Egg retrieval

  • Sperm preparation

  • Tier 2 Skill Acquisition:

  • Egg denuding

  • Fertilization check

  • Embryo scoring

  • Assisted hatching

  • Micro drop insemination

  • Tier 3 Skill Acquisition:

  • Embryo cooling/freezing

  • Embryo warming/thawing

  • Egg cooling/freezing

  • Egg warming/thawing

  • Embryo transfer

  • Tier 4 Skill Acquisition:

  • Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection into egg

  • Embryo biopsy

  • Testicular sperm extraction

  • Evaluate performance using SOPs, competency tools and training worksheets. Be promoted to next tier upon successful completion of each previous tier.

  • Maintain open communication regarding lab and patient care concerns with staff and providers

  • Record IVF cycle results in the hospital EMR system

  • Report embryology results using an EMR to patients during IVF cycles

  • Record and report data for research and compliance reports for various state and national organizations.

  • Process and reconcile patient billing

  • Meticulously maintain records

  • Regularly attend meetings pertaining to the lab

  • Perform other related duties as required MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in an biochemistry, or reproductive sciences, or equivalent education or experience

  • Two year's experience practical laboratory experience particularly in reproductive biology DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as an embryologist, andrologist, is preferred but not required
