The College of the Environment's Department of Atmospheric Sciences is a nationally recognized and dynamic academic community with 20 faculty members, 70 graduate students, 70 undergraduate students, and 50 research and staff members.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences has a fantastic full-time job opening for a Research Coordinator ( Temporary ). This role will support two large research projects led by faculty in the department: Professor Robert Wood and Professor Alex Turner.

The primary purpose of this Research Coordinator position is to provide research coordination and support for two major research projects led by faculty in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. These are: (1) The FETCH4 project led by Professor Alex Turner; (2) the Marine Cloud Brightening Program, for which Professor Robert Wood is principal investigator and affiliate professor Sarah Doherty is the program manager. Under the supervision of the project leads Turner and Wood, the Research Coordinator (RC) duties include but are not limited to performing the day-to-day operations and management of research projects, organizing planning meetings, working closely with project members on travel and procurement, project correspondence, and record keeping. Additionally, the RC will provide logistical support for field and other travel activities. The RC will also work with the project leads to produce progress reports for funders and partners, maintain websites, and create posters and other communication tools.

As a Department of Atmospheric Sciences member, the Project Coordinator will report to Professor Rob Wood and Professor Alex Turner. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating activities on projects led by Professor Wood and Professor Turner. This includes, but is not limited to: hiring staff, ensuring the timely submission of project deliverables, organizing external meetings and workshops, organizing travel for the projects, procurement and reimbursement, tracking and processing award receipts, managing post-award finances of research grants, and contracts, and developing outreach materials. This role requires advanced project management and fiscal skills, the ability to work independently, and the capacity to be an effective team player. Communication skills will also be crucial, as the Project Coordinator liaises with faculty, collaborators, UW partner offices, and award sponsors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 50% Coordinating research project activities for the FETCH4 project with Professor Turner.

  • 50% Coordinating research project activities for the Marine Cloud Brightening Program with Professors Wood and Doherty.The following is an estimated approximate responsibility breakdown, although this will change significantly from month to month depending upon what activities are taking place. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • 20%: Pre and post-award Grants and Contract Administration. This includes assisting in preparing budgets for future proposals budget projections and budget reconciliation for current grants.

  • 20%: Organizing meetings and workshops and travel for project members. Organize an annual team meeting for researchers from the US and internationally. This includes arranging travel and/or reimbursement for team members.

  • 20%: Helping to draft and maintain project planning documents and reports to sponsors and other parties. Help maintain project websites. Successful candidates will assist in drafting and maintaining planning documents such as Gantt charts.

  • 20%: Maintaining strong communications between group members at 19+ institutions. Projects involve researchers across multiple institutions, countries, and continents. Successful candidate will help to ensure teams are communicating and project deliverables are on schedule. Communication will be via email, slack, zoom, and in-person (for members at UW).

  • 20%: Providing logistics support for field activities. Both FETCH4 and the Marine Cloud Brightening Program entail fieldwork in the US and internationally. Duties will include assisting in organizing travel and helping coordinate delivery of materials necessary for the field activities. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree and One or less years experience. Specify the type of experience required:

  • Proficiency working with Microsoft software: Word, Excel (spreadsheet development and tracking), PowerPoint, SharePoint; Google Drive, Google Docs; Adobe software, Acrobat Pro. Experience working with Google and other calendar/scheduling applications.

  • Proven administrative, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with others. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills; demonstrated ability to work and communicate courteously and effectively with faculty, staff, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • You have demonstrated the ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience and knowledge must be appropriate to develop applications that will enhance service to the Department.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.

  • Proven ability to effectively plan, multitask, and prioritize tasks with competing deadlines.

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position will work at the University of Washington’s Seattle campus.
