The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for 2 Part Time/50% FTE Research Coordinators to provide critical support for the THRIVE (Trajectories of Recovery after Intravenous propofol versus inhaled VolatilE anesthesia) clinical trial. This research project will examine patient experiences and the quality of recovery after general anesthesia. The UW is one of 12+ sites throughout the US for this clinical trial. The trial seeks to compare short- and long-term recovery from surgery and anesthesia, as well as safety outcomes including unintended awareness during general anesthesia, to determine which anesthetic technique yields a superior patient recovery experience. As many as 300 patients at UW will be recruited annually for this trial, with subjects follow-up extending to one year after surgery.

Major duties for this position will include:

Coordination of Research Activities: 50% Data Collection and Management: 40% Research Project Administration: 10%

This position requires outstanding communication, interpersonal, and executive management skills. In addition, this position requires excellent research skills by adhering to standardized research and interviewing protocols while also having the ability to maintain the confidentiality of research data. The research coordinator role has a unique opportunity in the coordination of research activities, data collection and management, and research project administration. Additional effort may be added with increasing study recruitment.

The patient volumes and the breadth of conditions clinicians encounter at our hospitals provide ample opportunity to conduct high-quality clinical and translational research with the goal of improving public health. Our faculty and the research they conduct are recognized nationally and internationally. The goals of departmental research programs include advancing knowledge in health and disease and improving the quality of patient care in perioperative and pain medicine.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Coordination of Research Activities – 50%

  • Conduct screening of medical records to identify eligible subjects

  • Conduct recruitment of subjects via various methods (in-person clinic visits, email, phone, patient portal messages, online platforms)

  • Administer in-person surveys to subjects in the preoperative room, recovery room, and hospital rooms

  • Conduct follow-ups with subjects as needed Data Collection and Management 40%

  • Collect data via medical record abstraction

  • Comprehend and interpret complex supplemental electronic applications

  • Troubleshoot data collection issues as they arise and within the scope of the position Research Project Administration – 10%

  • Assist with research billing

  • Assist with IRB correspondence for the study

  • Participate in other study-related activities as needed MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social, Behavioural, Health, or Biomedical sciences

  • 1 year’s experience working in the medical and/or research field OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in research data collection with patients undergoing anesthesia and surgery

  • Experience in REDCap data collection system

  • Experience in EPIC

  • Certification in Good Clinical Practices

  • Human subjects ethics training and HIPAA training

  • Prior experience and training in clinical trials

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Ability to learn new software programs DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
