The Research Scientist/Engineer 2 (NE S UAW RSE) in this role will perform investigations of HIV that lead to novel vaccines and antivirals therapeutics, through understanding immune response and virus structure/function

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Hands on research including bench work, tissue culture, experimental design, etc. including but limited to the following approaches – 70%

  • 10x Genomics single cell RNA sequencing

  • Flow cytometric cell analysis and sorting

  • Virologic assays

  • ELISA assays

  • Molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, DNA purification and analysis, DNA sequencing)

  • Protein/antibody purification and analysis via electrophoresis and western blot

  • Handling blood and tissue samples from humans and non-human primates

  • Handling HIV-samples and cultures using stringent BSL2+3 practices

  • Cell culture techniques (maintenance and use of cell lines, primary cells, transfections, virus infections)

  • Learn established procedures in the lab

  • Contribute to developing, troubleshooting, optimizing, and implementing new procedures

  • Contribute to the overall development and progression of the research programOrganizing, Planning & Logistics – 20%

  • Assume responsibility of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and expertise

  • Ensure that equipment is maintained, serviced, and used properly

  • Recommend upgrades to instrumentation and procedures as necessary

  • Actively contribute to lab data organization quality control, and inventories of samples and reagents

  • Maintain electronic and written records of all experiments and data

  • Maintain detailed and updated protocols for all procedures and approaches

  • Assist with purchasing, budgets, and spending

  • Communicate and interact with collaborating labs

  • Complete and update required regulatory trainings and approvals (IACUC, IRB, Biosafety etc.)

  • Maintain chemical inventory and proper storage and disposal of chemicals

  • Contribute to lab organization, stocking, and overall tidiness

  • Work with others as a team towards a common goal

  • Follow all policies at all timesData Analysis and Interpretation – 10%

  • Record results of experiments

  • Compile and analyze data

  • Prepare figures for publications, presentations, progress reports, and grants

  • Contribute to writing of publications and grants

  • Literature Review

  • Participate in productively in regular lab meetings MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences or related field of study AND 2 years of specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily:

  • Knowledge of HIV/SIV, molecular biology, basic immunology, tissue culture, 10x Genomics, and/or glow cytometry.

  • Experimentation with HIV/SIV, human, and animal samples

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enhanced job performance will require high motivation and a keen interest in HIV, virology, immunology, and/or vaccines.

  • The successful candidate should be able to work and communicate productively with other, possess a strong work ethic, and have a desire to produce scientific results that advance the research program.

  • Experience in flow cytometry and 10x Genomics RNA sequencing are strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with animal studies and NIH funded research programs are also preferred.
