The Department of Astronomy has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4 to join their team.

This position will focus on research and development of novel algorithms and techniques in support of next generation survey astronomy and the commissioning of those telescopes.

This position primarily supports the construction of the Rubin Observatory, and successfully conducting the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). When it enters operations in 2023, LSST will conduct the widest, fastest and deepest survey of the southern sky carried out to date. It will identify tens of billions of stars, galaxies, and solar system objects. It will enable paradigm-changing research in the fields of weak lensing cosmology, galactic astronomy, transient and variable astronomical sources, and the contents of the solar system. The University of Washington is a major stakeholder in LSST; the Department of Astronomy hosts the Director (Prof. Željko Ivezic), groups working on the developing the LSST survey strategy and on commissioning the facility, and is responsible for the prompt processing system which will identify transient, variable and moving objects in the LSST image stream. This is a role for an experienced developer working within the Rubin Observatory adaptive optics and commissioning group at UW. This position will refine existing algorithms and develop new algorithms under limited guidance for Rubin. This role will be responsible for

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 40%: the integration of adaptive optics algorithms within the Rubin software pipelines

  • 40%: development of tools for and analyses of Rubin data to enable the commissioning of the Rubin Observatory

  • 20% mentoring and/or training and engaging in scholarly activities with postdoctoral scholars, research scientists and students who will engage in the commissioning and operation of the LSST. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Physics or Astronomy plus 5-7 years of experience Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
