The University of Washington School of Art + Art History + Design (SOA+AH+D) engages and educates students in essential issues of visual history and literacy, the creative process and visual communication, and innovative and socially responsible design. We work closely with leaders in the arts, academic and business communities to ensure that our students understand the role that this education will play in their future success as professionals and global citizens. SOA+AH+D has approximately 40 faculty and 23 staff members serving approximately 600 undergraduate and 60 graduate students plus more than 1,000 non-majors enrolled in our courses. We are seeking highly qualified candidates to fulfill the role of Academic Adviser.

The School of Art + Art History + Design, in the College of Arts and Sciences, has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Adviser in the Advising and Academic Services Office. This role serves as the primary administrative link for undergraduate students to the School, College, and the University by coordinating practices, policies and programs that help guide and support student learning. The Academic Adviser is responsible for advising prospective students, pre-majors and declared undergraduate majors in the School of Art + Art History + Design, communicating academic policies and processes to aid students in decisions about their academic progress within the School and beyond. Not only does this role work frequently with students, but also collaborates frequently with faculty regarding academic policies, course curriculum, and student concerns. This role works under the supervision of the Director of Academic Advising. This position interacts with the Director of Advising, Director of the School, Administrator, Division and Program Chairs on various academic services projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Academic Advising (80%)

  • Advise Art, Art History and Design undergraduate students in-person, via online video conference, via phone and email to guide students through a goal-centered, transparent, and accessible University experience.

  • Advise students on admissions and course requirements for the School’s different undergraduate degree programs and concentrations.

  • Advise prospective students and pre-majors on specific UW and School undergraduate degree requirements.

  • Maintain strict standards of confidentiality and discretion according to FERPA and University Policies.

  • Work with students to address concerns and complaints by informing and connecting them with School and University health, wellness, and safety resources.

  • Support students as they explore classroom to career pathways and highlight alumni connections.

  • Other duties as assigned.Student Services (20%)

  • Maintain a welcoming and supportive advising climate for all students.

  • Work with faculty and or students to address academic misconduct concerns.

  • Develop and coordinate new and existing programs and events to enrich student learning experiences in the School and the University.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Academic Advising Office on the following:-Organize and lead activities and events for students including Information Sessions, Freshmen and Transfer Advising and Orientation Sessions, Graduate Student Orientation, Graduation Celebration, Division of Design Admission Process, Scholarship Reception, Student Voice Project (SVP), Alumni Network, and the Free Materials Library and other School and University-wide events.-Represent the School at various College and University meetings and committees. Stay informed on updates and changes to academic advising practices, policies, and procedures.-In coordination with faculty, administer and manage the School’s Scholarships and awards process.

  • Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience working with undergraduates in a college or university setting.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Practice developing or managing policies, programs and events that enrich learning and experiences for students.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and administrative skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.

  • Commitment to serving and supporting a diverse student body. Demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity, access, and inclusion.

  • Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite/Google suite.

  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education or work experience in the arts.

  • Interest and investment in the value of arts education.

  • Have working knowledge of databases designed to provide information for and about students.

  • Familiarity with UW administrative systems or their equivalents: Student Data Base, Electronic Academic

  • Records System, BI Portal, Enterprise Data Warehouse, Time Schedule and MyPlan.

  • Familiarity with UW academic policies and processes.

  • Understanding of the student experience and the educational mission of a research-intensive public institution.
