The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Visual Communications Lead at the SPIRIT Center.

The SPIRIT Center at the University of Washington is comprised of faculty, continuing education specialists, trainers, research staff, program coordinators, and an administrative support team committed to improving the care of individuals who have or are at risk for a serious mental illness (SMI). SPIRIT stands for Supporting Psychosis Innovation through Research, Implementation, & Training. The Center supports stakeholders within and across the healthcare system to provide empirically supported and culturally informed treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) and CBTp-informed care. Since 2006, the SPIRIT Center has provided workforce development training to support and sustain the implementation of evidence-based practices that can enhance the recovery of individuals living with serious mental illness. The UW SPIRIT Center is part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. Reporting to the Director of Training and Education, the Visual Communications Lead will collaborate with various stakeholders (Director of Training & Education, clinical trainers, faculty, Center leadership) on the conceptualization and design of visually appealing and accessible multimedia content and course materials (slides, handouts, audio & video clips, course graphics). This position will also lead design processes related to the development of branded and accessible digital (and occasionally print) materials for Center initiatives such as annual reports, newsletters, brochures, infographics, toolkits, presentation materials, signage, etc. The Visual Communications Lead may occasionally be asked to provide mentorship and/or consultation related to creative tasks assigned to other administrative or communications staff within the Center.

The Visual Communications Lead provides strategic visual brand direction and leads the overall development of creative concepts related to the Center’s various initiatives and workforce training offerings. The Visual Communications Lead furthers the University’s mission by ensuring the Center’s visual communication products related to workforce development are succinct and effective, which supports external partnering organizations and clinicians in the successful execution of evidence-based therapeutic interventions (for 1500+ trainees annually).

This position offers a hybrid work schedule with the possibility of travel.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Graphic & Multimedia Design (60%)

  • Provide leadership in the areas of multi-media production (Premiere, Biteable) & graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite) for the Center’s workforce training offerings (hosted on Canvas).

  • Devise and implement creative solutions for the concept and design of Center-related print & digital collateral such as infographics, branded graphics, tip sheets, handouts, marketing tear sheets, slide design, etc. (Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Suite).

  • Establish, update, and maintain brand style guides.

  • Independently manage assigned design tasks.

  • Meeting with relevant stakeholders to ensure successful project completion.Accessibility Design (20%)

  • Provide leadership around sustainable and socially responsible design solutions.

  • Help effectively communicate Center research related to Serious Mental Illness (SMI).

  • Design digital materials that are usable and inclusive.

  • Conduct accessibility audits and report on findings.

  • Provide innovative solutions for accessibility challenges (adhering to WCAG guidelines).

  • Advise Center staff on accessibility best practices.Design Consultation or Mentorship (10%)

  • Consult with and support administrative or communications staff on the execution of creative tasks (slide and handout design, accessibility coding, animated explainers), helping them effectively accomplish their work.Brand & Asset Management (10%)

  • Establish, update, and maintain brand style guides.

  • Organize and maintain a digital library for brand resources, such as PowerPoint templates, Word templates & logos.

  • Maintain a photo/video library that includes internal media and approved stock images.

  • Coordinate with relevant vendors and stakeholder groups, when applicable. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Photography/Videography, Journalism, Marketing, or other relevant field; or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 2 years of work experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Portfolio demonstrating high-quality, innovative design work.

  • Have prior experience working in a major academic or administrative department, design firm, marketing group, or relevant organization contributing graphics for publications, digital documents, or web.

  • Experience with the development and design of scholarly or related publications, digital marketing materials, or the full range of printing and publication activities.

  • Academic preparation or field-training in graphic design for print and digital materials.

  • Experience with brand & identity management, specifically controlling a brand's visual aspects and design elements to ensure consistency and accuracy.

  • Fluency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

  • Basic understanding of designing for accessibility.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships.

  • Ability to set priorities, take initiative, problem-solve, and handle multiple projects.

  • All staff occasionally (rarely) perform tasks outside of their primary job function, such as scheduling or event support. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Basic skillset in one or more of the following (or ability or willingness to learn):

  • Video & audio production (editing and recording in Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition).

  • Animation (Adobe After Effects).

  • Building course structures in the Canvas LMS.

  • Building course pages in Articulate 360 Rise.

  • Digital photography & photo editing.

  • Basic understanding of HTML/CSS.

  • Experience coding PDFs for accessibility using Adobe Acrobat.

  • Experience designing for accessibility for screen readers.
